People living with disabilities and people with other lived experiences, such as carers, are invited to have their say on access and inclusion in Alpine Shire.

Our Access and Inclusion Plan 2025-2028 will outline how we will promote and support access and inclusion for people living in Alpine Shire, recognising that not every person has the same experience.

Engagement includes a digital survey available right here, on Engage Alpine, as well as drop-in sessions at libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty, and Myrtleford.

You can also contact Daisy Day, our Community Development Coordinator, to share your experiences directly.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 says that local councils must make sure everyone has equal access to jobs, public buildings, services, and facilities - no matter their abilities.

In Victoria, all councils must have a Disability Action Plan or an Access and Inclusion Plan. These plans help Councils take action to:

  • Remove barriers that make it hard for people with disability to take part in community life
  • Create more job opportunities and change attitudes in the community
  • Improve the quality of life for people with disability by making services and spaces more accessible.

We are committed to making our communities inclusive and accessible for everyone, including people with disability. This means ensuring equal access to jobs, buildings, services, and community life.

We understand that disability can take many forms - physical, mental, cognitive, or sensory - and that people may face extra challenges based on their age, gender, culture, or background.

We’re working across all areas of our organisation to:

  • Design and upgrade public spaces to be accessible
  • Make our services, events, and information inclusive
  • Support inclusive employment practices
  • Partner with local groups and advocate for broader change

We also support local businesses to improve accessibility and offer grants for community projects that promote inclusion.

There are some services that are outside of our control, such as transport, in-home care, and housing.

However, we will continue to advocate to the responsible authorities across state and federal government for better access and support for our communities.
