Previous engagement for our Alpine Shire Rural Directions Strategy
To help us develop the Strategy, we developed an Issues and Opportunities Paper in 2025 to identify several challenges and opportunities around rural land use in Alpine Shire. The Paper focused on selected rural towns, small settlements, and rural localities as identified in our Alpine Land Development Strategy. The purpose of this Paper was to start a conversation with rural landowners and users to help us understand your needs and priorities.
We commenced community consultation and invited residents to attend one of three in-person workshops, as well as one online session to provide feedback. We then extended our consultation period and held three further in-person sessions in Harrietville, Tawonga, and Wandiligong. We were keen to understand the rural issues faced by locals in these smaller towns and surrounding areas.
Your feedback informed the Strategy, which can also:
- Identify and protect areas of agricultural and landscape significance;
- Guide high level future land use and activities for rural settlements;
- Identify locations for existing and emerging rural employment;
- Identify ways to support growth in the rural economy; and
- Review existing rural planning controls and propose changes as needed.
Your experience and knowledge are vital to ensuring rural land in Alpine Shire meets the needs and expectations of the rural landowners and users going forward.
You can have your say in a few different ways:
- Register to attend an in-person workshop or drop-in session and speak with members of our Strategic Planning team;
- Complete an online survey or pick up a hard-copy survey from our Council office in Bright or one of our libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty, or Myrtleford;
- Share your feedback on a specific location by dropping a pin on our online interactive map; or
- Send a written submission to info@alpineshire.vic.gov.au or 2-6 Churchill Avenue, Bright VIC 3741.
