Great news for casual, contract and self-employed workers in Victoria

14 May 2024

More than 400 jobs have been added to the Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee, which means thousands more workers can now access sick and carer's pay.

The Sick Pay Guarantee provides 38 hours a year of sick and carer's pay at the national minimum wage ($23.23 per hour) to eligible casual and contract works in certain jobs. Workers who stay at home when they are sick help to protect the health of their work colleagues, customers, and all Victorians.

Workers in the following jobs should check if they are eligible:

  • Food, hospitality and accommodation
  • Retail and sales
  • Supermarkets and supermarket supply chains
  • Factories, manufacturing and warehousing
  • Administration, clerical and call centres
  • Cleaning and laundry
  • Beauty, fitness and personal services
  • Taxi, rideshare and delivery driving
  • Security
  • Carers, aides and social assistance
  • Health, agriculture and animal care
  • Forestry, horticulture and gardening
  • Tourism and outdoor recreation
  • Arts and creative industries

Workers can check their eligibility and sign up through the Service Victoria app or vic.gov.au/sick-payguarantee

Victoria is the first state in Australia to have this program. The program is fully funded by the Victorian Government and runs until 13 March 2025.
