Dispose of your skis and snowboards

30 September 2025

As we approach the end of another snow season, you might find it is time to retire your snow equipment for good. Below is some information on how to dispose of your old skis and snowboards and things to consider before you toss them out.

Modern skis and snowboards are made of a laminated wood or composite core, surrounded by composite layers of carbon, metal and fiberglass for stiffness and flexibility, a protective top sheet and a high-density polyethylene base, plastic sidewalls and metal edges. This makes them difficult to recycle and they can only be recycled by a specialised recycler.

The good news is metal bindings can be recycled if they are removed from the skis. To dispose of skis at our transfer stations, metal bindings must be removed first, this is easiest before arriving at the transfer station.

If your snow sport equipment, including boards, skis, taboggans, boots and stocks still have a little life in them, consider selling or donating them. Our Alpine Shire Tip Shop, located at Myrtleford Transfer Station, is just one place that takes donations of used sporting equipment.

Another way to keep these items out of landfill is creating furniture or wall art with them. A bit of creativity can give your beloved sporting equipment a second life.
