Glass bin state wide advocacy

6 May 2026

Last year Alpine Shire Council joined a group of 34 councils advocating to the Victorian Government to delay the implementation date for the glass-only bin and find a way forward that maximises recycling efforts, but minimises the financial impact on local communities.

This group of councils is currently running a state-wide survey you can lend your voice to:

Do you want to pay for a separate glass recycling bin?

The state government has directed all local councils to roll this out by mid-2027.

For many households, this would mean an extra bin at home, on top of the recycling bin already used for glass. In total, that’s 4 bins for most homes.

More bins can mean less space and higher costs, at a time when many households are already managing rising living expenses. It could also mean more waste trucks on our streets.

We believe there’s a better way to recycle glass and we want the Victorian Government to hear directly from our community.
