In early 2022, Council completed the Sport and Active Recreation Plan 2022-2032 (the Plan). The Plan identifies opportunities to increase community participation in sport and active recreation.

Recommendations from the Plan include master planning for our community’s major sport and active recreation hubs: Pioneer Park in Bright, Mount Beauty Sport and Education Precinct, and Myrtleford's sporting reserves and parks.

The three master plans will set out a vision to help us plan for the needs of Alpine Shire communities.

Each of the sport and active recreation sites across Bright, Mount Beauty, and Myrtleford offer sport and active recreation facilities and infrastructure of assorted ages, layout, and condition.

Pioneer Park includes the following facilities and open spaces: Pavilion, BBQ facilities, the main football and cricket oval, cricket nets, equestrian area, netball court, pump track, Mystic Mountain trail head car park, playground, Scout Hall/Alpine Cycling Club rooms, tennis courts, and the Oaks Lawn.

The Sport and Education Precinct in Mount Beauty includes the following facilities and open space: pondage walking trail and boat ramp, Bicentennial Park including the playground and BBQ facilities, skate park, BMX track, Mount Beauty Cricket Ground (football and cricket ground), Mount Beauty Recreation Reserve Pavilion, cricket nets, netball court, tennis courts and clubhouse, Scout Hall, Les Peart Oval (next to the secondary college), Mount Beauty Swimming Pool and the indoor stadium.

Myrtleford’s town centre parks and reserves include the facilities and open spaces within Memorial Park, McNamara Reserve, Jubilee Park, Rotary Park, Swinburne Park, Cundy Park, the Savoy Soccer Club, Marconi Park, and the Myrtleford Recreation Reserve.

We are speaking with our sport and active recreation user groups, event organisers, and our residents about how we can improve our facilities and open spaces to better service our communities as they grow.

We are also auditing and evaluating the condition of our facilities, collecting user data, and speaking with sport representative bodies. Once we have gathered all relevant data, we will complete schematic plans and priority lists for review.

The Alpine Shire community will have an opportunity to comment on the draft master plans in early 2024, prior to final plans being completed and presented to Council for endorsement.

Many of our facilities and open spaces are aging and we want to make sure our community assets are appropriate for our community. The goals of the master plans are to:

  • Improving accessibility and inclusiveness for all
  • Determine the need for additional facilities and infrastructure
  • Identify appropriate facility renewals
  • Determine the best location for specific sport and active recreation activities
  • Create improved opportunities for informal recreational opportunities
  • Determine ways to better activate and connect the spaces
  • Create improved active transport linkages to sites
How can I get involved?

Council called on users of our local sport and active recreation spaces and facilities to help plan for the future of our key reserves and parks.

Council met face-to-face with formal sport and active recreation user groups of each site, and ran an online community survey to gather further community input.

The draft Sport and Active Recreation Master Plans (Schematic Drawings) are available to view and make comment below.

Whether you visit the playgrounds with your children, use parks for exercise, or meet with friends for casual sport and activities, we would love to hear from everybody who is interested in the future of these areas.
