New lease on life for Myrtleford’s Memorial Hall

8 April 2022

The iconic Myrtleford Memorial Hall will soon be filled with volunteers, community members and visitors, with plans to relocate the Myrtleford Visitor Information Centre and renovate the hall to support more community use.

The historic building has remained unused for more than 10 years. A much-needed internal renewal began in 2020 but was paused in 2021 to ensure the final outcome met the needs of the community.

Alpine Shire Council recently endorsed the relocation of the Myrtleford Visitor Information Centre from inside Alpine Gate Cafe to the hall once renovations are complete.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said it will be wonderful to see the VIC relocate to such an iconic building.

“Built in 1925 as a monument to WWI personnel, Memorial Hall is a place of nostalgia for many local residents,” she said.

“It closed its doors more than 10 years ago, so I am really pleased that we will finally see new life breathed into this important piece of local history.

“What better place to welcome our visitors than this beautiful, central hall, that encapsulates so much of the story that makes our region unique.”

The ageing timber floor has been repaired, the electrical switchboard will be upgraded and heating and cooling installed.

Two internal meeting rooms will be added and available for community use, providing a valuable gathering space.

Cr Nicholas said an accessible entry and toilets, along with a kitchen and storage will be added to the current auditorium area, leaving ample space for groups and community gatherings.

“The project was paused in 2021 to ensure that we got it right,” she said.

“The exciting new design meets the needs of our VIC volunteers, community members and visitors alike.

“The refurbishment is not simply internal - the outside area will be landscaped to create an accessible, attractive space with outdoor seating, gardens and ramp.

“I can’t wait to see the finished project and the Memorial Hall in use again.”

The Myrtleford Visitor Information Centre will relocate to Memorial Hall once initial renovation works are complete, anticipated to be the end of June.
